En kvalitativ studie om intensivsykepleieres og legers erfaringer med covid-19 pandemien

Sammendrag

Bakgrunn: Covid-19-pandemien forandret arbeidshverdagen til helsepersonell over hele verden. Det var mangel på smittevernutstyr og intensivpersonell, lite kunnskap om viruset og store omveltninger på flere sykehus for å behandle pasientene med covid-19. I lys av dette var det interessant å undersøke hvordan intensivsykepleiere og leger som stod i front i behandlingen av kritisk syke pasienter med covid-19 opplevde denne fasen.

Hensikt: Hensikten med studien var å utforske intensivsykepleiere og legers opplevelser med å jobbe med de kritisk syke pasientene med covid-19 under pandemien, og å utforske hvordan samarbeidet mellom helsepersonellet opplevdes under covid-19.

Metode: Et eksplorerende design med et semistrukturert intervju ble valgt, og 11 informanter fordelt på to fokusgrupper ble inkludert fra en intensivavdeling på et sentralsykehus i Helse Sørøst. Intervjuene ble gjennomført oktober 2020. Analysen ble gjennomført med kvalitativ innholdsanalyse inspirert av Graneheim og Lundman.

Resultater: Funnene i studien synliggjør hovedtema: fra kaos til mestring. Videre gav analysen to kategorier og seks subkategorier. Kategorien «fra usikkerhet til trygghet» omhandler subkategoriene «opplever å bli gamblet med», «fysiske påkjenninger i møte med den nye og ukjente jobbhverdagen» og «opplevelsen av å bli ivaretatt». Kategorien «opplevelse av unikt samarbeid» omhandler subkategoriene «faglig og sosial tilhørighet», «faglige forventninger» og «faglig forberedthet». Resultatene drøftes opp mot aktuell forskning og Antonovskys begrep «salutogenese» og sense of coherence.

Konklusjon: Intensivsykepleiere og leger har opplevd usikkerhet og redsel under covid-19-pandemien. Det har vært en krevende tid for helsepersonell blant annet på grunn av mangel på smittevernsutstyr og lite kunnskap om viruset. Men pandemien kan ha bidratt positivt for arbeidsmiljøet, det oppstod et unikt samarbeid på tvers av profesjoner, og en opplevelse av å stå sammen.

From chaos to coping
A qualitative study of intensive care nurses’ and doctors’ experiences with the Covid-19 pandemic

Background: The Covid-19 pandemic changed the working lives of healthcare professionals around the world. There was a shortage of infection control equipment and intensive care personnel, little knowledge of the virus and major upheavals in several hospitals to treat patients with Covid-19. In light of this, it was interesting to investigate how the intensive care nurses and doctors who were at the forefront of the treatment of critically ill patients with Covid-19 experienced this phase.

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to explore the intensive care nurses’ and doctors’ experiences working with critical ill patients with Covid-19 during the pandemic, and to explore how the collaboration between the health personnel was experienced during the pandemic.

Method: An exploratory design with a semi-structured interview was chosen, and 11 informants divided into two focus groups were included from an intensive care unit at a central hospital within the South-East Regional Health Authority in Norway. The interviews were conducted in October 2020. The analysis was conducted with qualitative content analysis inspired by Graneheim and Lundman.

Results: The findings of the study highlight main topics: from chaos to coping. Further gave the analysis two categories and six subcategories. The category “from uncertainty to security” deals with the subcategories “experience to become gambled with”, “physical stresses in the face of the new and unknown workday”, and “the experience of being taken care of”. And the category “experience of unique collaboration” deals with the subcategories “academic and social affiliation”, “professional expectations” and “professional preparedness”. The results were discussed up against Antonovsky’s terms “salutogenesis” and “sense of coherence”.

Conclusion: Intensive care nurses and doctors have experienced a sense of uncertainty and fear during the Covid-19 pandemic. It has been a challenging time for healthcare personnel partly because of a lack of infection control equipment and little knowledge of the virus. However, the pandemic may have contributed positively to the working environment, there was a unique collaboration across professions, and a sense of unity.
